Creating portraits for an actor is more than just photographing a face. It conveys emotion and hints at the types of roles the actor might be suited for. It should reflect the actor’s essence, whether that’s confidence, vulnerability, intensity, or warmth, giving casting professionals a sense of who they are before a word is spoken. Subtle expressions, posture, and eye contact all play a role in communicating a believable and compelling presence and telling a story.
Let me introduce you to an inspiring actor from Southern Illinois, USA. Jeff McGoy! and let me share some portraits from his collection.

What inspired you to pursue acting?
It was a suggestion from my high school drama teacher the late Dr. Lynn Steveson. I would always imitate wrestlers or cartoon characters as a kid but when I got into high school, she encouraged me to pursue it.

2: You mentioned that you participated in some acting opportunities already. Can you tell us a little bit more about that? I have performed in stage plays, short films, some voice over work, and a few commercials over the years. I have also produced, performed and directed 19 one-man shows where I have performed up to 12 characters that I have created.

What has been your biggest challenge as an actor so far?
The biggest challenge for me is always memorizing lines. I want to immediately get into character and that process drives me crazy.

How do you prepare for a role? I truly study the text and try to get to know the character that the writer has created. Their mannerisms, thought process, posture, the relationships they have and more. I follow that up with bringing the character to life and becoming that character.

Who are your acting role models or inspirations?
Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro are my favorite actors! I study their movies and performances on a regular.

What is a dream role you would love to play someday?
That would be the character of Othello or the actor Paul Robeson who portrayed that character on Broadway.

How do you deal with stage anxiety?
Have you ever experienced it or not? I get very nervous minutes before a performance then my adrenaline ramps up and I get really hyped up to start. I get in a zone and block everything out as I transform into the scene and role.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
I hope to be retired from my professional job and working as a professional actor. I have not been on stage since 2018 and that urge is coming back and even stronger.
